IWA Bonn Charter
The Bonn Charter for Drinking Water provides a framework outlining the institutional, managerial
and operational requirements for the effective provision of safe drinking water. The framework is
relevant to all those collectively contributing to the provision of a water supply system from
catchment to consumer emphasising an integrated approach to the effective management of
drinking water supplies. The framework offers a means of providing safe drinking water in the 21st
century and thereby improving public health and is a pivotal part of IWA's drinking water quality
programme.
The Charter identifies fundamental key principles considered essential in creating a management
framework for the reliable provision of good, safe drinking water and also defines the roles and
responsibilities of stakeholders involved in the management of water quality.
Water safety plans are a key element of the IWA Bonn Charter for Safe Drinking Water. The Charter
recognises the pivotal role played by water suppliers in managing drinking water quality and supports
their primary role in the development and implementation of water safety plans.
